A 500-pound black bear that became known as Hank the Tank for breaking into homes in South Lake Tahoe, Calif., has been moved to the Wild Animal Refuge near Springfield, Colo.
Hank, in fact a female bear named Henrietta, was granted approval by Colorado Parks and Wildlife and the Colorado Department of Agriculture to be relocated to the state, according to The Wild Animal Sanctuary, which operates four refuges across Colorado and Texas.
Henrietta was transported last week to a temporary introduction enclosure within a 230-acre forested habitat. She is “doing well and getting used to her new surroundings,” The Wildlife Sanctuary said in a statement.
The Wild Animal Refuge spans nearly 10,000 forested acres near Springfield, with a natural landscape that includes rocks, hills, canyons, buttes, bluffs, trees and water, the sanctuary said.
Henrietta gained fame after she was captured in numerous home surveillance videos, breaking into more than 20 properties in the South Lake Tahoe area.
“We thank the California Department of Fish and Wildlife for carefully handling her situation,” the sanctuary said. “We also want to thank Governor Jared Polis and First Gentleman Marlon Reis for their support toward ensuring she could be relocated to a safe and appropriate sanctuary setting.”
