Flamingo Chicks Named Astro and Orbit in Honor of the Astros Born at Houston Zoo

Chilean flamingo eggs have hatched at the Houston Zoo in Texas for the first time in six years, and the new chicks have been named Astro and Orbit in honor of the Houston Astros Major League Baseball team. A video shared by the zoo shows the Chilean flamingos nesting, which they do by laying a single egg atop a mound. The parents take turns sitting on the egg to keep it warm, and after about 30 days a chick is hatched. The fluffy hatchlings are born gray or white, and it can take up to three years to turn fully pink, the zoo said. The new chicks, along with other flamingos currently nesting, can be seen on exhibit behind the Flamingo Terrace, or on the zoos Flamingo Cam livestream from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. CT.
