One of the new walruses at Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium in Tacoma, Wash., can be seen whistling and blowing bubbles in his new home.
In a video shared by the zoo, male walrus Balzak can be heard “whistling” for visitors.
“In between whistling, 7-year-old Balzak enjoys fresh water from the hose,” the zoo tweeted alongside the video. “Walruses whistle and produce other vocalizations, like groaning, growls, roars, barks and blowing bubbles, as natural behaviors.”
The zoo said walruses are among the most vocal of all pinnipeds, or fin-footed animals.
Balzak and female walrus Lakina arrived at Point Defiance in November of last year from the Aquarium du Québec in Canada. The 7-year-old walruses were born just weeks apart and have been together all their lives, the zoo said.
